2008 NEWMAC MEN'S TENNIS TOURNAMENT - Lyons swept by conference power MIT in semifinal round

NEW LONDON, CT- The fourth-seeded Wheaton College men's tennis team saw its season come to a close Saturday afternoon in the semifinal round of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament, as the Lyons fell to top-seeded Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 5-0 at the United States Coast Guard Academy.

Reaching the semifinal round of the tournament for the sixth straight spring and ninth time in the league's 10-year history, Wheaton finishes its season at 9-7. Ranked 18th in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the Lyons posted their sixth consecutive winning season. MIT, the region's 13th-ranked team, advances to its 10th straight conference final, where it will face third seed Babson College this afternoon. Seeking their 10th successive NEWMAC title, the Engineers are 14-5.

At first doubles, sophomore James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled) dropped an 8-4 decision, as did first-years Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) in the third position.

Needing just two singles victories to win the match by decision, the Engineers claimed decisive wins in the second and third positions. In an incomplete match in the top slot, Poulin lost his opening set during a 7-6 tiebreaker.

Freshmen Kevin Pang (Torrance, CA/California Academy of Math and Science) and Ken Van Tilburg (Kapellen, Belgium/Sint-Michielscollege Brasschaat), who secured victories in the second and third singles slots, respectively, were the match's lone multiple winners after figuring in two doubles triumphs.
