Men's tennis falls to streaking non-conference foe Salve Regina

April 18, 2008

NEWPORT, RI- The Wheaton College men's tennis team fell to Salve Regina University, 9-0 in a non-conference match on Friday. The Lyons, ranked 18th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast poll, slip to 8-5 overall, while the 17th-ranked Seahawks stand 15-3 after winning their 15th consecutive match since the fall season.

In doubles matches, sophomores Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) recorded Wheaton's best performance, falling by a score of 8-3 in the top position.

Little later turned in a strong showing during his first set at third singles, slipping to senior Michael Collins (Winchester, MA/Winchester), 7-5 before retiring from his match in the second set. In the fourth position, freshman Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) nearly pulled even after losing his opening set but came up shy, 6-2, 7-5.

Wheaton returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play tomorrow, completing its regular season slate with its fourth consecutive road match. The Lyons oppose nine-time NEWMAC regular season and tournament champion Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at 1:00 p.m.
