Lyons fall at Springfield, drop second straight NEWMAC matchApril 12, 2008 SPRINGFIELD, MA- The regionally-ranked Wheaton College men's tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss to Springfield College on Saturday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Appleton Courts, as two Lyon singles players fell in three sets. The Blue and White, which is ranked 18th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast poll, is now 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the league. The Pride improved to 6-4 and 3-1. During doubles play, each of Wheaton's three tandems lost by identical 8-3 scores, as the Lyons entered singles in a 3-0 hole. In singles, sophomore Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) corralled a 6-4, 6-4 triumph in the third slot, remaining perfect in NEWMAC play at 4-0. At the sixth position, junior Nii Manfoi Davies (Town & Country, MO/The Principia) earned his second win in his third match back from injury, capturing a 6-4, 6-3 victory. Two other Lyons took their singles opponent to three sets before coming up short. Freshman Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled) won the first set at top singles, 7-6 before junior Andrew Constant (Kingston, NY/Kingston) took the final two sets, 6-2 and 6-1. In the fifth slot, freshman Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) sandwiched a 7-5 second-set win between a pair of 6-4 losses to junior Bobby Schlink (Quaker Hill, NY/Waterford).
