Wheaton collects 6-3 win over Coast Guard in NEWMAC play

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team topped the visiting United States Coast Guard Academy, 6-3 in a New England Women and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match on Saturday in Beard Field House. The Lyons, who are ranked 18th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast poll, improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Bears are now 1-6 and 0-2.

The Lyons began the day by taking two of three doubles matches. Sophomore James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Gregory Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled) had an 8-4 victory in the first position, while sophomore Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and freshman Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) followed with an 8-3 triumph at number two.

In the third slot, freshmen Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) narrowly fell to Coast Guard sophomore Brett Sillman (Larkspur, CA) and freshman James Vuckovic (Valrico, FL), 8-6.

Krantz and Altman highlighted singles matches by defeating the Bears in the fourth and fifth slots, respectively, as each lost only two games. Two Lyons won in three sets, as Poulin corralled a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win in the first slot, while Hudgins rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory at three. In the sixth position, sophomores Eric Pelletier (Bangor, ME/Bangor) and Vince Falco (Wimberley, TX) played an epic match, with the Bears' Falco proving triumphant by a 6-4, 1-6, 14-12 final.

Wheaton faces off with visiting Salem State College on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.
