Trio corrals weekly men's tennis honors from NEWMAC

March 31, 2008

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's tennis standout Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Singles Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, March 30, while James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and Greg Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled) corralled the league's doubles team-of-the-week honor.

Hudgins, a sophomore, drew his second career weekly award from the NEWMAC, having also drawn a singles accolade on March 17. Little, also a sophomore, and Poulin, a freshman, earned the initial weekly conference laurels of their respective careers.

Hudgins went 2-0 out of the third singles position last week, blanking an opponent from the University of Massachusetts at Boston on Tuesday before winning his match against Clark University on Saturday by a 6-0, 6-1 count. At 8-2 this season, including 7-1 during the spring campaign, Hudgins is nearing the 10 wins he recorded while drawing NEWMAC All-Conference honors as a freshman. In doubles play, Hudgins has gone 8-5, including 5-2 in 2008.

Little and Poulin won twice last week in the top doubles position, notching an 8-1 triumph against a Beacon duo before knocking off a Cougar tandem, 8-3. The twosome has gone 5-4 this year, including 5-2 since the calendar changed to 2008. Each has also played an integral role in Wheaton's singles lineup. Little is 5-2 out of the second slot after playing only one singles match as a freshman, while Poulin is tied for the team lead with eight victories, having gone 5-2 as the Lyons' first-position singles player.

Wheaton, which is 6-2 overall, 1-0 in the NEWMAC and ranked 18th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast poll, returns to action on Saturday when it hosts league foe United States Coast Guard Academy at 1:00 p.m.
