Lyons open NEWMAC play with 9-0 triumph over visiting Clark

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team opened its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate with a 9-0 victory over Clark University on Saturday in Beard Field House, as the Lyons yielded 21 games between singles and doubles play. Wheaton, which sits 18th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast poll, improved to 6-2. The Cougars slipped to 1-3 after dropping their league opener.

The Lyons began play with three quick doubles victories. Sophomore James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Greg Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled) had an 8-3 triumph in the first position, while sophomore Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and freshman Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) followed suit at number two. In the third slot, freshmen Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) corralled an 8-2 win.

Altman and sophomore Eric Pelletier (Bangor, ME/Bangor) highlighted singles action by blanking their foes in the fifth and sixth slots, respectively. Hudgins won at number three, 6-0, 6-1, Little earned a 6-1, 6-1 triumph in the second position, and Krantz recorded a 6-2, 6-3 victory at four. In the top spot, Poulin won the first set, 6-1 before sweeping behind a 6-4 win in the second set over junior Adam Bisceglia (North Granby, CT/Granby Memorial).

Wheaton heads to the road on Monday, facing Salem State College at 4:00 p.m.
