Lyons roll to 9-0 sweep against UMass-Boston in men's tennis actionMarch 25, 2008 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 sweep of visiting University of Massachusetts at Boston Tuesday afternoon in Beard Field House, as the Lyons saw their overall record improve to 5-2. The Beacons slip to 0-2 on the young season. Wheaton dominated play throughout today's match, capturing all but one game in doubles action. Sophomore Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and freshman Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) won 8-0 in the second spot, while freshmen Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) went clean at number three. Sophomore James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and first-year player Greg Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled) also had little difficulty in the top doubles position, as the tandem secured an 8-1 decision. Two Wheaton players swept their singles opponents while three others were within a game of doing the same. Hudgins and Altman blanked their foes at three and five, respectively, while Little, Krantz and sophomore Eric Pelletier (Bangor, ME/Bangor) surrendered a single game in the second, fourth and sixth spots. Poulin and junior Paul Braude (West Yarmouth, MA/Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) took part in the day's closest match, as Poulin needed to take the opening set's final two games to break a 5-5 tie before finishing the straight-set win with a 6-3 outcome in the second frame. Wheaton completes its four-match homestand on Saturday, opening its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate versus Clark University at 1:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
