Men's tennis opens home slate with 8-1 triumph over Bridgewater State

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team moved to 4-1 following its home-opening 8-1 triumph over local foe Bridgewater State College Tuesday afternoon in Beard Field House. The Bears began their spring season today.

The Lyons rattled off three victories during doubles play, as sophomores Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) captured an 8-1 win in the top spot.

Freshmen Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) earned an 8-3 decision at second doubles, while first-year players Trent Faltin (Durham, NH/Oyster River) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) recorded an 8-4 victory in the third slot.

The hosts came away with five of six singles wins, including a super-tiebreaker victory in the top spot. After emerging victorious by a 6-3 count in the first set, Little dropped a 7-5 second-set decision to junior Matt Charest (Somerset, MA/Somerset) before picking up a hard-fought 12-10 win in the super breaker.

Hudgins claimed a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in the second spot, while Altman and sophomores Chapman Beekman (South Kingstown, RI/South Kingstown) and Eric Pelletier (Bangor, ME/Bangor) each secured wins in the fourth through sixth positions.

Senior Barry Gorman (Hopedale, MA/Hopedale) tallied Bridgewater State's lone victory with a 6-1, 6-2 final at number three.

The Lyons continue their four-match homestand on Saturday afternoon against Skidmore College at 1:00 p.m.
