Hudgins named NEWMAC Singles Player of the Week for initial time

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's tennis standout Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) was named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Singles Player of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, March 16. The sophomore received his first collegiate weekly honor.

Hudgins went undefeated in four singles matches at the third position to help lead Wheaton to a 3-1 record during its spring trip in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Including the fall season, Hudgins is 5-1 this year after serving as Wheaton's primary sixth singles player in 2007.

Against Shenandoah University on March 9, Hudgins allowed just two games in a season-opening 9-0 win. He then notched a 6-1, 6-4 victory in a sweep of Defiance College the next day and surrendered just three games in Wheaton's third shutout, against the University of Charleston on March 11. Hudgins finished the trip with a 7-5, 6-0 decision during the Lyons' 7-2 loss to regionally-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College on March 12.

In doubles action, Hudgins' tandem made quick work of its first two opponents, downing Shenandoah's second duo, 8-2 before blanking Defiance. Against the University of Charleston, Hudgins and his partner battled for a 9-7 victory.

Wheaton, ranked 18th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast poll, opens its northern spring slate tomorrow against Bridgewater State College at 3:30 p.m.
