Lyons open Hilton Head trip with 9-0 blanking of Shenandoah

HILTON HEAD, SC- Using a lineup comprised of four freshmen and three sophomores, the Wheaton College men's tennis team opened its season with a 9-0 victory over Shenandoah University of Virginia on Sunday, as the Lyons played the first of four matches down south in as many days. The Hornets are now 2-1, having played for the first time since late September.

During doubles play, each of Wheaton's top two tandems won by 8-2 counts. Sophomore James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Greg Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled) combined for a first-position victory, while sophomore Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) and freshman Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) joined in the second slot. At number three, freshmen Harry Altman (Riverdale, NY/The Dwight School) and Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) held off Hornet junior Drew Evans (Amherst, VA/Amherst) and freshman Julian Fehr (Berryville, VA/Clarke County) by a 9-7 score.

Each of the Lyons' singles players won in straight sets, with Krantz corralling the most convincing victory, 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth slot. Hudgins yielded a total of two games at number three, while Poulin and sophomore Eric Pelletier (Bangor, ME/Bangor) lost only three games apiece in the first and sixth slots, respectively. Little notched a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at number two, while Altman registered a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the fifth position.

The Lyons continue their trip tomorrow against Defiance College of Ohio at 1:00 p.m.
