Lyons men's tennis hosts four-team Wheaton InvitationalSeptember 16, 2007 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team hosted a four-team invitational Sunday, playing against Division I College of the Holy Cross and Division III counterparts Colby-Sawyer College and Wesleyan University at the Clark Tennis Courts. The Lyons had a doubles tandem reach the final round of its flight and a singles player win his consolation match. Freshman Greg Poulin (Boxboro, MA/Home Schooled) posted Wheaton's lone singles victory with a 6-4, 6-1 decision in the second flight consolation final. He dropped his first match of the day by a 6-1, 6-3 final in the opening round. In the first singles flight, sophomore James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) suffered a 6-4, 6-2 setback to his opponent from Wesleyan before dropping a 7-6 outcome in the first set of a two-set loss to Colby-Sawyer. The second-set score was 6-2. Wheaton's second doubles tandem comprised of freshmen Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) and Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) easily defeated their opposition from Colby-Sawyer with an 8-1 score in the first round. The duo was handed an 8-2 loss to a Wesleyan pair in the final. Junior Nii Manfoi Davies (Town & Country, MO/Principia) and sophomore Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) battled in both of their doubles matches in the first flight. The tandem was set back by an 8-5 decision to Wesleyan in the first round before succumbing 9-8 in the consolation final. Wheaton takes next weekend off from competition before returning to action at the end of the month for the three-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament at Williams College on September 28-30.
