September 8, 2007

NARRAGANSETT, RI- The Wheaton College men's tennis team kicked off its fall slate by placing fifth among seven teams on Saturday at the Grass Court Doubles Tournament, hosted by Salve Regina University at the Point Judith Country Club.

The Lyons collected four points, narrowly finishing behind fourth-place College of the Holy Cross, which had five, and third-place Stonehill College, which had six. The host Seahawks won with 18 points.

The top performance turned in by a Wheaton doubles tandem came in the second flight, where junior Nii Manfoi Davies (Town & Country, MO/The Principia) and sophomore Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) won the consolation final.

After falling in the first round to a duo from Division II Bryant University, 8-3, Davies and Hudgins downed a pair from New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) counterpart United States Coast Guard Academy, 8-5 in the semifinal round of the consolation bracket. In the consolation final, Wheaton's tandem defeated Salve Regina junior Collin Cunningham (Wethersfield, CT/Xavier) and freshman Chris Tolo (Shelton, CT/Shelton), 8-6.

In the third doubles flight, senior captain Thomas Fearon (Cambridge, United Kingdom/Cushing Academy) and freshman Cullen Garrity (Middletown, MD/Saint James School) knocked off a team from Johnson & Wales University, 8-2 before coming up short against a Bryant tandem, 8-3 in the second round.

Wheaton's top doubles duo of sophomore James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) and freshman Brian Krantz (Milford, CT/Joseph A. Foran) also competed on Saturday but bowed out in the opening round.

The Lyons return to action next Sunday, September 16, when they host the Wheaton Invitational, which begins at 10:00 a.m.
