April 23, 2007

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's tennis standout Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Singles Player-of-the-Week laurels for the week ending on Sunday, April 22, as Payman has amassed five weekly accolades this spring and 12 for his career.

Payman knocked off a nationally-ranked player and a regionally-ranked foe during a perfect 3-0 week, as he defeated first-singles opponents from NEWMAC powerhouse Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Salve Regina University and regionally-ranked Tufts University. Tufts is fifth in the Northeast according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), while MIT stands ninth.

Payman began the week with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Tufts on Tuesday before downing the 17th-ranked player in the Northeast by a 6-0, 6-3 score during Thursday's sweep over Salve Regina. He capped the week with a three-set win over the nation's 12th-best player, posting a 3-6, 7-6, 10-8 victory over MIT.

Extending his singles winning streak to nine matches, including an unblemished 5-0 in the NEWMAC, Payman is approaching a combined 120 singles and doubles victories for his career. Standing at 116-49, he is 63-22 in singles action and 53-27 during doubles competition.

Wheaton, which is ranked 12th regionally by the ITA, enters this week's NEWMAC Tournament with a 10-4 record. Finishing second in the regular season standings with a 4-1 mark, the Lyons advance to Saturday's semifinal at MIT. They will be pitted against the winner of Thursday's match between Springfield College and the United States Coast Guard Academy.
