Lyons' six-match winning streak ends in regional battle with Tufts

April 17, 2007

NORTON, MA- In a battle between two of the top teams in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Northeast region poll, Tufts University edged Wheaton College, 5-3 in non-conference men's tennis action on Tuesday in Beard Field House. The 12th-ranked Lyons fell to 9-3 while seeing their six-match winning streak come to an end, and the fifth-ranked Jumbos improved to 7-3.

The Jumbos took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, as the Lyons earned their lone point when seniors Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day School) and Raymour Radhakrishnan (Amherst, NH/Bridgton Academy) teamed up for an 8-2 win at the second position.

The remaining two matches came down to tight decisions. Tufts seniors Geoff Loh (Deerfield, IL/Brebeuf Jesuit Prep) and Sean McCooey (Cumberland, RI/Mount Saint Charles), the seventh-ranked doubles tandem in the region, held on for an 8-6 victory against Lyon seniors Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) and Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) at the top spot. In the third position, Jumbo senior Corey Keller (Jericho, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) and freshman Jon Trott (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) downed Wheaton senior Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) and freshman James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island), 8-5.

In singles play, Payman won at the top spot, 6-3, 6-2, while Dressler improved to 12-0 this spring with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at number three. McCooey notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the second spot, and freshman teammate Andrew Rosen (Armonk, NY/Byram Hills) corralled a 7-6, 6-3 triumph in the fourth position to keep the Jumbos in front, 4-3. With senior Craig Kunkes (Atlanta, GA/Woodward Academy) leading Radhakrishnan, 4-3 in the third set of the number-five match, Tufts sophomore Vinh Tran (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) finished off a 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 win at six against freshman Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) to clinch the team victory.

The Lyons play for the fourth time during a regular season-ending five-match homestand by taking on Salve Regina University on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
