Payman's perfect singles week leads to fourth league honor this spring

April 16, 2007

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's tennis standout Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) earned yet another New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) weekly honor Monday afternoon, this time picking up the singles player-of-the-week award for the week ending on Sunday, April 15.

Payman posted straight-set wins in each of his number-one singles matches last week, helping the Lyons to a 2-0 mark. Payman initially knocked off his opponent from Babson College by a 6-2, 6-0 count during Wheaton's sweep on Wednesday before picking up a 6-0, 6-2 triumph in Saturday's 7-2 victory over Springfield College.

Payman, who received conference honors for singles once earlier this spring and doubles accolades twice, extended his winning streak to six matches while moving to 9-2 in dual match play. Remaining perfect in the NEWMAC with a 4-0 mark, Payman now has 112 career wins, going 60-22 in singles play and 52-25 during doubles action.

Wheaton carries a six-match winning streak into tomorrow afternoon's home match against regionally-ranked Tufts University at 3:30 p.m. The Jumbos are ranked 10th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast poll.
