Wheaton continues torrid pace with 7-2 home triumph against SpringfieldApril 14, 2007 NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team continued its torrid pace Saturday afternoon against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Springfield College, as the Lyons stretched their win streak to six following today's 7-2 triumph at Clark Tennis Courts. Wheaton moves to 9-2 overall while remaining tied atop the conference standings at 4-0. The Pride falls to 4-5 and 2-2. The teams began doubles play with three hard-fought matches, including a 9-8 result decided by a tiebreaker that went in favor of the visitors, as junior Joe Lisi (Southbridge, MA/Southbridge) and sophomore Andrew Constant (Kingston, NY/Kingston) edged seniors Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) and Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) in the top position. Wheaton's third doubles tandem had an equally close match, with senior Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) and freshman James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) coming out on top with a 9-7 decision. The Lyons left doubles play with a 2-1 edge thanks to seniors Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day School) and Raymour Radhakrishnan (Amherst, NH/Bridgton Academy), who posted an 8-5 victory at number two. The hosts took five of six straight-set decisions during singles play, including Payman's 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Constant in the top spot. Dressler allowed just two points at three in collecting his 11th straight victory of the spring, Stoddard picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win in fourth singles, Danishevsky earned a pair of 6-3 decisions at two, and freshman Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) accounted for a 6-2, 7-5 victory in the sixth slot. Springfield freshman Trevor Romanzi (Bayshore, NY/Bayshore) won 6-0, 6-3 at five. Wheaton steps away from league play on Tuesday with a home match against regionally-ranked Tufts University at 3:30 p.m. The Jumbos stand 10th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll.
