Lyons open northern slate with 7-2 loss to non-conference foe Brandeis

March 20, 2007

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team opened its northern slate with a 7-2 loss to Brandeis University, which is ranked 14th in the region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), on Tuesday in Beard Field House. The Lyons are now 3-2, while the Judges improved to 4-4.

The Judges took all three doubles matches, though they had to wrestle a pair of tight decisions from the Lyons. In the top spot, seniors Sam Jonas (Toronto, Ontario/Metro Prep) and Michael Vulfovich (Lexington, MA/Lexington) clipped Wheaton seniors Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) and Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington), 9-8 by winning a tiebreaker.

In the second doubles position, seniors Jordan Bieber (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) and Adam Sher (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) notched an 8-6 victory over Lyon seniors Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day School) and Raymour Radhakrishnan (Amherst, NH/Bridgton Academy). Judge sophomores Scott Schulman (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) and Derek Tesser (Chesterfield, MO/Parkway Central) won at third doubles, 8-3.

Dressler stayed perfect in singles, moving to 5-0 behind a 7-6, 3-6, 10-7 victory in the third position against Sher in a battle of southpaws. Freshman Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) had Wheaton's other point, also gutting out a three-set match behind a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 decision at number six versus Tesser.

Payman won his first set in the top slot before succumbing in three to Vulfovich, while Radhakrishnan and senior Cliff Silverman (Tampa, FL/Herrick) also locked up in a three setter. Radhakrishnan took a one-set lead before falling in a third-set tiebreaker. Jonas and Bieber won Brandeis' other matches in the second and fourth slots, respectively.

Wheaton doesn't return home until April 11, as the Lyons' next four matches are on the road, beginning with Skidmore College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
