March 11, 2007

HILTON HEAD, SC- The Wheaton College men's tennis team got its spring trip started on the right track, as the Lyons handled Nazareth College, 8-1 Sunday afternoon in Hilton Head. Wheaton is 1-0 following its first dual match of the 2006-07 season, while the Golden Flyers slip to 1-1.

Senior captain Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) collected his 97th and 98th career victories thanks to today's singles and doubles sweep. Payman bounced back from a one-set deficit to senior Andras Putyera (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) in the top singles spot before posting a 6-1 triumph in the second set and a 10-7 final in the tiebreaker. Payman also sided with classmate Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) for an 8-2 win at first doubles.

Seniors Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day School) and Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) earned an 8-6 victory in the second doubles position, while classmate Raymour Radhakrishnan (Amherst, NH/Bridgton Academy) and freshman James Little (Mount Desert, ME/Mount Desert Island) paired up for a convincing 8-1 win in the third slot.

In singles action, Danishevsky, Dressler, Radhakrishnan and first-year Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) each won in straight sets. Danishevsky topped his opponent 6-1, 6-3 at second singles, while Dressler was victorious 6-3, 6-2 at number three. Radhakrishnan turned in the day's most convincing performance with a clean sweep in the fifth position, and Hudgins picked up his first collegiate singles win with a 6-3, 6-0 outcome at number six.

Payman seeks career win number 100 tomorrow afternoon against Rhodes College. He and the Lyons will begin play against the Tennessee school at 12:00 p.m.
