Dressler and Payman lead Wheaton at 14th annual Middlebury InvitationalSeptember 24, 2006 MIDDLEBURY, VT- Seniors Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) and Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) each picked up two doubles victories and one singles win to lead the Wheaton College men's tennis team at the 14th annual Middlebury College Invitational this weekend. The Lyons sent a total of four players to compete in both the singles and doubles flights. Dressler and Payman had little difficulty defeating University of Rochester junior Aaron Gettinger (Mount Kisco, NY/Yorktown) and sophomore Jeffrey Titcombe (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep), 8-2. The tandem then advanced to the semifinal round by posting a 9-7 triumph over Trinity College junior Brett Ramsay (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) and sophomore Gautam Samarth (Pune, India/Bishop's). They finished play on Sunday with an 8-5 loss to Middlebury seniors George Mayer (Merion, PA/Lower Merion) and Alex Scott (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane). Wheaton seniors Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day) and Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) also won their opening doubles match, needing a tiebreaker to edge Skidmore College junior Jack Martin (Concord, MA/Middlesex) and sophomore Dane Pfeiffer (Old Lyme, CT/Old Lyme), 9-7. The tandem eventually suffered an 8-6 setback to Bates College junior Danilo Acosta (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Americano De Quito) and freshman Zach Fenno (Armonk, NY/The Masters School). In singles action, Payman knocked off Rochester junior Eric Hansen (Penn Yan, NY/Saint Stephen's) in a super tiebreaker 5-7, 7-5, 10-5 before dropping a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 decision to Scott. Dressler also needed a super breaker in his opening match, as he overcame a first-set deficit to turn back Colby College senior Tom Gildersleeve (Lexington, MA/Lexington) 3-6, 6-4, 10-7. He eventually lost to Bowdoin College freshman Jamie Neely (Quincy, MA/Thayer Academy) 6-2, 6-4. Playing in the lone Friday match, Stoddard dropped a 6-0, 6-1 final to Middlebury freshman Eliot Jia (Mount Desert, ME/Choate Rosemary Hall). On Saturday, Danishevsky lost 6-3, 6-2 to Middlebury first-year athlete Andrew Thomson (West Bloomfield, MI/Detroit Country Day). The Wheaton men wrap up their fall season next weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Tournament. The three-day meet hosted by Williams College is set to begin on Friday.
