Danishevsky and Payman sweep singles flights at Wheaton Invitational

September 17, 2006

NORTON, MA- Seniors Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day) and Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) swept the men's tennis singles flights at Sunday's four-team Wheaton Invitational. The Lyons hosted Colby-Sawyer College, Wesleyan University and Division I College of the Holy Cross during the non-scoring event.

In addition to capturing both singles flights, Wheaton placed its first doubles tandem in the championship match, and its second doubles combination salvaged a 1-1 mark with a victory in the consolation match.

Payman cruised through his two matches, defeating Holy Cross senior Brian Kelly (Winchester, MA/Winchester) 6-2, 6-0 in the opening round and sweeping Wesleyan sophomore Matthew O'Connell (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) 6-0, 6-0 in the final.

Danishevsky's road to the title match was a bit tougher, as he edged Holy Cross sophomore Angelo Sica (Chester, NJ/West Morris Mendham) 7-6 in the first set before completing the straight-set win with a 6-2 triumph. Danishevsky then knocked off Wesleyan sophomore Saiyid Rizvi (Burlington, VT/Burlington) 6-3, 6-2 to claim the championship.

In doubles action, seniors Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) and Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) downed Colby-Sawyer junior Trevor Davis (Bath, ME/Morse) and sophomore Evan Campbell (Wilder, VT/Hartford) 6-2, 6-2 before dropping a three-set decision to Wesleyan sophomores Alejandro Alvarado (Hyde Park, MA/Noble and Greenough School) and Paul Gerdes (Omaha, NE/Westside) 6-0, 3-6, 8-10.

In the second doubles flight, sophomore Nii Manfoi Davies (Town & Country, MO/The Principia) and freshman Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) lost their opening contest to Wesleyan juniors Michael Frank (Lexington, MA/Belmont Hill School) and Max Schenkein (Norwell, MA/Norwell) 6-1, 6-3, but bounced back in the consolation with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Colby-Sawyer senior Andrew Pillsbury (New Haven, CT/Wilbur Cross) and junior Topher Dubay (Auburn, ME/Saint Dominic Regional).

Wheaton returns to action next weekend at the three-day Middlebury College Invitational. The Lyons will be represented by Danishevsky, Dressler, Payman and Stoddard.
