Two-time champion Wheaton finishes second at Grass Court Tournament

September 9, 2006

NARRAGANSETT, RI- The two-time champion Wheaton College men's tennis team nearly captured its third successive Grass Court Doubles Tournament title after falling one point short of host Salve Regina University Saturday. The Lyons accumulated 10 team points in the eight-team field, while the Seahawks posted 11.

Seniors Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day) and Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West), who captured the third doubles championship a year ago, highlighted the event with a title in the second flight. The tandem knocked off Divison I College of the Holy Cross, 8-3 before defeating Division II Stonehill College 7-6, 6-3 in the semifinal and Vassar College 7-5, 6-2 in the final.

Senior captain Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) fell short of his quest to capture the top doubles crown for the third consecutive year, joining classmate Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) for a semifinal round finish. The duo won 8-3 in its opener with Vassar before falling to the team from Salve Regina 6-3, 6-1.

Sophomore Nii Manfoi Davies (Town & Country, MO/The Principia) and freshman Kyle Hudgins (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) competed in their first Grass Court action, with the tandem reaching the semifinal round of the third flight. They downed New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe United States Coast Guard Academy, 8-1 in the first round before falling 6-3, 6-1 to the host Seahawks.

The Lyons continue their fall season next Sunday with the Wheaton Invitational. The four-team invite slated to be played at the Clark Tennis Courts will start at 10:00 a.m.
