Wheaton narrowly drops regular season finale at Wesleyan, 4-3April 24, 2006 MIDDLETOWN, CT- The nationally-ranked Wheaton College men's tennis team lost its regular season finale at Wesleyan University, 4-3 on Monday. The Lyons, who are ranked 25th nationally and sixth in the Northeast by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), fell for the second straight match and enter the upcoming New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament at 10-5. The Cardinals, who are 15th in the region, won for the third time in four matches and moved to 10-4. The Blue and White began play by picking up the doubles point after winning two of three matches. Wheaton's top doubles tandem of junior Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) and sophomore Sean Daly (Miami, FL/La Salle) downed Wesleyan senior Max Kates (Claremont, CA/Alamo Heights) and junior Tallen Todorovich (Pound Ridge, NY/Hackley School), 8-5 before the Lyons clinched the point behind a second-doubles victory by seniors Nick Potter (Concord, NH/Concord) and Matt Sheers (Beacon, NY/Beacon). During singles play, the teams were at a three-all stalemate while the final match, a second-slot meeting between Daly and Todorovich, was still in progress. Daly notched a 6-4 victory during the first set, but Todorovich rallied to take the final two sets, 7-5 and 6-3 to clinch individual and team triumphs. Wheaton tallied two singles points, as Sheers notched a 6-4, 6-3 win at the fourth position and Potter recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory at number six. Junior Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) rallied from a one-set deficit to force a third set at fifth singles against freshman Paul Gerdes (Omaha, NE/Westside) before falling 3-6, 6-3, 3-6. The Lyons return to action when they host the NEWMAC Tournament this weekend on the Clark Tennis Courts. Wheaton begins play Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against an opponent which will be determined on Tuesday afternoon. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz. Last updated on 2/21/07. |
