Men's tennis reaches 10-win plateau with triumph at Salve Regina

April 20, 2006

NEWPORT, RI- The Wheaton College men's tennis team won for the seventh time in eight matches with a 7-2 non-conference victory over Salve Regina University on Thursday. The Lyons are 10-3 and recorded double-digit wins for the fourth straight season, as well as the seventh time in eight years. The hosts had their four-match winning streak broken and fell to 12-5 after just their second loss in 12 spring matches.

Playing under the nine-point system employed by the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), of which Salve Regina is a member, Wheaton started play by picking up two of three doubles points. The junior tandem of Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day) and Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) notched an 8-2 win at the second spot, while senior Matt Sheers (Beacon, NY/Beacon) and junior Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) posted an 8-4 win at number three.

At the top slot, Seahawk sophomores Jason Lago (Seabrook, NH/Berwick Academy) and Robbie Norton (Exeter, NH/Exeter) picked up a 9-8 win over Wheaton junior Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) and sophomore Sean Daly (Miami, FL/La Salle) in a tiebreaker.

Daly, Danishevsky, Sheers and Dressler earned straight-set singles wins at the second through fifth positions, respectively. At number one, Payman dropped the first set to Norton but rallied to remain undefeated in 12 dual matches this season with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win. Salve Regina junior Matthieu Brichon (Frouville, France/Fragonnard) turned in the hosts' lone singles victory with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 decision at number six.

In a battle of unbeaten New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) squads, Wheaton and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) complete their conference schedules Saturday in Cambridge at 1:00 p.m. The match will decide the regular season league champion and the top seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament.
