Lyons corral second straight sweep of NEWMAC men's tennis awards

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's tennis standouts Sean Daly (Miami, FL/La Salle) and Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) accolades for the week ending on Sunday, April 16, as Daly was named singles player of the week while the duo drew doubles team honors.

A sophomore, Daly improved his singles dual record to 8-3 with a pair of straight-set victories from the second position. Daly posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over his Babson College counterpart during Wheaton's 7-0 sweep on Wednesday and won, 7-5, 6-4 against his Springfield College opponent in the Lyons' 6-1 victory on Saturday.

In doubles, the tandem of Daly and Payman, a junior, improved to 7-2 when playing at first doubles and remained unbeaten in conference play with two more victories last week. The duo knocked off a team from Babson, 8-5 and a twosome from Springfield, 8-3.

As a team, the Lyons have won 23 of 24 singles points during NEWMAC play this season and are 12-0 in doubles action. Thanks to four combined wins between singles and doubles play last week, Payman now has 85 career victories.

Daly and Payman lead the Lyons, who are ranked sixth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast poll with a 9-3 overall record and 4-0 conference mark, into a non-league showdown at Salve Regina University on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. On Saturday, Wheaton squares off with NEWMAC co-leader Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to determine the regular season conference champ. MIT has won all seven regular season crowns.
