Wheaton still undefeated in NEWMAC after 6-1 win at SpringfieldApril 15, 2006 SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team remained perfect in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) and maintained its first-place tie with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) after defeating Springfield College, 6-1 on Saturday. The Lyons are now 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the league, while the Pride is 2-7 and 0-4. Behind three victories, Wheaton took the doubles point. Junior Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) and sophomore Sean Daly (Miami, FL/La Salle) combined for an 8-3 win at number one, senior Matt Sheers (Beacon, NY/Beacon) and junior Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) notched an 8-2 victory in the second position, and senior Nick Potter (Concord, NH/Concord) and junior Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) blanked their opponents, 8-0 for a third-slot win. Payman remained undefeated in 11 dual singles matches with a 6-3, 7-6 win in the top spot over freshman Andrew Constant (Kingston, NY/Kingston), with Payman clinching the victory with an 8-6 decision in a second-set tiebreaker. Daly, Dressler and Potter picked up straight-set wins in the second through fourth positions, respectively, while senior Jeff Selesnick (Concord, NH/Concord) notched a 6-3, 6-4 victory at sixth singles. When Springfield sophomore Guy Lepore (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) picked up a 7-6, 6-3 win at fifth singles, it marked the first point the Lyons allowed in four conference matches this spring.
