Men's tennis falls to host Tufts, 5-2 in battle of regional heavyweightsApril 9, 2006 MEDFORD, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team, ranked ninth in the Northeast according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), ended its weekend on a down note with a tough 5-2 loss to 12th-ranked Tufts University in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon. The loss snapped the Lyons' four-match winning streak, as the Blue and White slip to 7-3 on the year. The Jumbos improve their record to 4-5 overall. The top pairing of junior Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) and sophomore Sean Daly (Miami, FL/La Salle) tallied the lone doubles win for the Lyons, coming back from being down 4-0 to grab a 9-7 win. However, 8-3 and 8-2 losses in the second and third positions, respectively, put the Lyons down 1-0 heading into singles play. Payman quickly evened the match at one apiece with a dominating 6-3, 6-1 victory at first singles, his ninth win in the top slot this spring. Wheaton junior Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) was the only other Lyon to record a singles victory, responding from a set down to topple junior Corey Keller (Jericho, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 at number five. Senior Nick Potter (Concord, NH/Concord) nearly picked up another point for the Lyons, as he too forced a third set before falling 6-3, 6-7, 11-9 in a super tiebreaker. The Lyons step back into New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play this Wednesday at Babson College beginning at 3:30 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
