April 8, 2006

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team did not relinquish a set en route to capturing its second straight New England Women's and Men's Conference (NEWMAC) victory via a sweep Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons secured a 7-0 decision over the United States Coast Guard Academy on Senior Day in Beard Field House. Wheaton is 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Bears slip to 5-4 and 1-1.

The doubles tandem comprised of senior co-captains Nick Potter (Concord, NH/Concord) and Matt Sheers (Beacon, NY/Beacon) got things rolling early for the Lyons, cruising to an 8-1 win in the third position, as the Blue and White remained unbeaten through 12 matches at number three. Wheaton also captured 8-4 victories at number one and two to seal the doubles point.

Singles featured a sextet of straight-set victories highlighted by a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory from senior Jeff Selesnick (Concord, NH/Concord) at number six. Juniors Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day) and Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) had little trouble knocking off their opponents, picking up 6-2, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-1 wins in the third and fourth slots, respectively.

At the top slot, junior Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) notched a 6-2, 6-3 victory over senior captain Matt Nakagawa (Kaneohe, HI), and at fifth singles, Potter topped senior Dan Lavinder (Richmond, VA) 6-1, 6-4. Sophomore Sean Daly (Miami, FL/La Salle) rounded out the singles victories for the Blue and White with a 7-5, 6-3 win in the second position.

Wheaton will play its third match in as many days tomorrow afternoon at regionally-ranked Tufts University. The match in Medford is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
