Lyons roll past nationally-ranked New York University, 7-0

April 7, 2006

NORTON, MA- After a tight trio of doubles matches Friday afternoon, the Wheaton College men's tennis team blanked nationally-ranked New York University, 7-0 in a non-conference match in Beard Field House. The win marks the third straight for the Blue and White, which is 6-2. The Violets, who were ranked 22nd in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, fell for the first time in five matches and are 6-3.

Doubles was close from the start as the teams on all three courts struggled to break serve. At third doubles, Wheaton seniors Nick Potter (Concord, NH/Concord) and Matt Sheers (Beacon, NY/Beacon) managed to break serve midway through the match and held on for an 8-5 win. The next match to finish was the top doubles match, where Lyon junior Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) and sophomore Sean Daly (Miami, FL/La Salle) dropped a hard-fought decision to NYU senior Nikko Buencamino (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley) and sophomore Mikhail Gurevich (New York, NY/American Heritage), 9-7.

The doubles point came down to Wheaton juniors Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day) and Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) downing senior Christopher Chang (Great Neck, NY/Great Neck South) and freshman Calvin Chou (Livingston, NJ/Livingston Senior), 9-8 in a tiebreaker to capture the win in the second position.

Singles was a different story, as the Lyons cruised to victory in all six positions. Payman took the first match, 6-1, 6-1, and Daly finished soon after with a 6-1, 6-3 final at number two. Down 4-1 in the first set, Danishevsky rattled off five straight games and then eased through the second set, winning 6-4, 6-1 at third singles. In the fourth slot, Sheers polished off a 6-1, 6-2 victory, while Dressler took a 6-1, 7-6 decision at number five. Potter closed out the singles sweep with an 8-2 victory at number six.

The Blue and White completes its four-match home swing against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe United States Coast Guard Academy tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
