Wheaton doubles tandem secures NEWMAC award for win over Bowdoin

April 3, 2006

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College men's tennis standouts Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) and Sean Daly (Miami, FL/La Salle) secured New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Doubles Team of the Week for the week ending on Sunday, April 2.

Payman, a junior who also recorded conference singles honors two weeks ago, and Daly, a sophomore, sided to pick up a dramatic 9-8 victory in a tiebreaker that lifted the Lyons to a thrilling 4-3 win over regionally-ranked Bowdoin College. Payman also collected a straight-set singles victory from the top slot against the Polar Bears.

During Saturday's 7-0 sweep of Clark University in Wheaton's NEWMAC home opener, Daly moved up a slot and posted a three-set win over his counterpart. Payman, who did not play singles against the Cougars, contributed to the victory with an 8-3 decision at first doubles.

Payman and Daly have combined to record a 3-1 doubles mark thus far. In singles action, Payman is a perfect 6-0 at number one and Daly 4-2 in dual matches.

Leading the regionally-ranked Lyons to a 5-2 overall record and 1-0 conference mark, the tandem is back in action with its Wheaton squad on Friday against New York University. The home match at the Clark Tennis Courts is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
