Lyons drop 6-1 decision to host Brandeis during first northern dual matchMarch 23, 2006 WALTHAM, MA- The Wheaton College men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to non-conference foe Brandeis University in its first northern dual match of the 2006 spring season Thursday night. The Lyons fall to 3-2 on the season, while the Judges move to 5-4 overall after tallying their fifth consecutive victory. Wheaton showed new doubles combinations at the first and third positions, putting together a strong showing despite dropping two of three matches. Senior captain Matt Sheers (Beacon, NY/Beacon) returned from a medical condition and teamed with junior Will Stoddard (Huntington, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) to grab a solid 8-6 win at third doubles. The junior duo of Brian Danishevsky (Hamden, CT/Hamden Hall Country Day) and Brad Dressler (Cranston, RI/Cranston West) dropped a close 8-6 match to Brandeis pair Scott Schulman (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) and Michael Vulfovich (Lexington, MA/Lexington) in the second spot. Singles play was highlighted by a straight-set victory from junior captain Payum Payman (Pleasant Valley, NY/Arlington) over junior Sam Jonas (Toronto, Ontario/Metro Prep) 6-4, 6-2 in the top spot. Other strong efforts came from senior captain Nick Potter (Concord, NH/Concord), who fell at number four in a third-set tiebreaker 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, and classmate Mike Moss (Needham, MA/Needham), who also went three sets before losing 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 at fifth singles. Senior Jeff Selesnick (Concord, NH/Concord) forced a tiebreaker in the second set before falling 6-3, 7-6 to Brandeis classmate Chris Hersel (Woodbury, CT/Sacred Heart) at number six. In the third position, Dressler dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision and Vulfovich topped Danishevsky 6-3, 6-2 at number two. Wheaton opens a four-match home stretch on Tuesday, when the Lyons welcome Bowdoin College to Clark Tennis Courts.
