Lyons place third among seven teams at East Collegiate Regional

BUFFALO, NY- The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team turned in a strong showing at the East Collegiate Regional, placing third among seven squads at Canisius College's Koessler Athletic Center Pool as the two-day competition ended on Sunday. The Lyons notched 77 points, just three shy of runner-up Keuka College. Canisius won the meet with 100 points.

The Blue and White had its best showing during the team routine, tying for second with a Keuka sextet at 83.500 points apiece. Senior Megan Kinney (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough School), junior Sylvia Syracuse (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West), sophomores Laura Montes (San Juan, PR/Academia San Jose) and Jenna Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden) and freshmen Jenna Calvino (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) and Sonvje Ryen (Bozeman, MT/Manhattan Christian) comprised the squad.

In duet, Swinkin and Syracuse placed third with 79.667 points, while Wheaton went three-four in the trio while using two three-swimmer groupings that had not competed together in a meet yet this year. Kinney, Montes and Ryen took third with 81.500 points, and Calvino, Swinkin and Syracuse were fourth at 79.333 as the Lyons fielded a pair of trio teams for the first time this season. In solo routines, Montes placed fifth with 84.333 points, coming within 1.334 points of third place.

Ryen was the top finisher in the nine-swimmer C figures field, notching 66.727 points. Three Lyons were among the top 10 in the B category. Kinney was third with 72.615 points, placing just 0.237 shy of second, while Syracuse was seventh with 71.247 points, just 0.498 out of fourth. Swinkin was ninth with 70.117 points. Montes placed fifth in A figures thanks to 83.793 points, which were only 0.200 away from putting her third, while Calvino was sixth in the 30-swimmer D figures competition with 56.604 points.

The Lyons are off until March 22, when they begin competition at the two-day Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship at 1:00 p.m. at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.
