Synchro opens Story era with third-place showing at Canisius InvitationalFebruary 2, 2008 BUFFALO, NY- The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team opened its season by placing third at the Canisius Invitational on Saturday at the Koessler Athletic Center Pool during Rebecca Story's debut as a collegiate head coach. The Lyons tallied 45 points, finishing behind the victorious Griffs' 88 points and Keuka College's 75. Sophomore Laura Montes (San Juan, PR/Academia San Jose) had Wheaton's best showing during the four routines, placing second in the five-athlete solo competition. Montes tallied 84.000 points, falling just 1.333 shy of the top finisher. Montes also helped Wheaton come in third during the team routine, as their 84.667 points left the Lyons 1.083 short of the runner-up team. She was joined by senior Megan Kinney (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough School), junior Sylvia Syracuse (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West), sophomore Jenna Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden) and freshmen Jenna Calvino (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack) and Sonvje Ryen (Bozeman, MT/Manhattan Christian). Swinkin and Syracuse's duet routine received 83.000 points and placed them third out of seven, while Montes, Ryen and Swinkin tallied 81.333 points during a fourth-place showing in trio, coming within 6.334 points of the winner in a tight field.
