April 27, 2007

INDIANAPOLIS, IN- Wheaton College freshman Laura Montes (San Juan, PR/Academia San Jose) finished 18th in the overall solo competition on Friday at the United States Synchronized Swimming National Championship in the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Natatorium. She was the first Lyon to compete at the event since 2005.

Montes placed 17th during the solo routines, totaling a score of 83.833 points to finish second among regional collegians. Her closest competition was an 18th-place Keuka College swimmer, who finished 0.666 points behind Montes. During the technical elements, she tallied 81 points, giving her a final score of 82.417 between the two events.

In her first season with the Blue and White, Montes helped the program to its 19th consecutive top-10 finish at the United States Collegiate Championship, which Wheaton hosted last month. She played a part in the Lyons winning a pair of meets, placing second in another, and coming in third during an additional two competitions.
