Wheaton hosts 2007 U.S. Collegiate Synchronized Swimming ChampionshipMarch 20, 2007 By Taylor Payne NORTON, MA- The 31st annual U.S. Collegiate Synchronized Swimming Championships will take place March 22-24 at the Balfour Natatorium on the campus of Wheaton College. The Lyons previously hosted the event in 2002. More than 250 of the top athletes from the collegiate scene will vie for titles in the solo, duet, trio and team events. The Championships are an open-class meet, combining competition from NCAA Divisions I, II , and III and NAIA colleges and universities. Stanford University (Palo Alto, Calif.) will be in search of its third straight National Championship title. Other top contenders include the Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio) and the University of the Incarnate Word (San Antonio, Texas) who claimed second and third places respectively in 2006. Stanford also boasts 2004 Olympians Sara Lowe (United States) and Courtenay Stewart (Canada) and 2006 U.S. National Team Members Elizabeth Anne-Markman and Poppy Carlig. United States Synchronized Swimming (USSS) serves as the National Governing Body for the sport of synchronized swimming, appointed as such by the United States Olympic Committee. USSS is a membership-based and non-for-profit organization which services the sport from the grass roots level to the National Team. The mission statement of USSS is "to provide leadership and resources for the promotion and growth of synchronized swimming, to achieve competitive excellence at all levels and to develop broad based participation."
