Wheaton synchronized swimming takes third at Division I power Stanford

February 17, 2007

STANFORD, CA- The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team traveled across the country this weekend to take on Division I national power Stanford University, where the Lyons finished in third place overall to the hosts and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Wheaton totaled 72 total points on Saturday at the Avery Aquatic Center, trailing Stanford's 102 points and UAB's 81.

During the team routine, seniors Elizabeth Corman (Saint Paul, MN/Hill-Murray School) and Sarah Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden), junior Megan Kinney (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough School), sophomores Sharada Strasmore (Weston, CT/Weston) and Sylvia Syracuse (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West), and freshmen Laura Montes (San Juan, PR/Academia San Jose) and Jenna Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden) took third with 81.750 points.

Montes also captured the bronze in the solo competition with 84.333 points, while she, Corman and Strasmore placed fourth in trio with 85 points. Wheaton's second trio, which featured the Swinkin sisters and Syracuse, finished fifth with 82.750 points. In the duet routine, senior Renata Paglio (Portland, ME/Deering) and sophomore Kelly Maby (Woodhaven, NY/Richmond Hill) came in fifth with 70.500 points.

The Lyons enjoyed much success in the figures portion of the meet, sweeping the B, C and D events. Wheaton was also credited with first-place team points for B figures, as its overall average was higher than Alabama-Birmingham's. In B, the Lyons took five of the top seven spots, including top-two finishes from Strasmore and Kinney, respectively.

Jenna Swinkin edged out sister Sarah by 0.062 points to win the C competition, while Paglio and Maby enjoyed the top placements in the D event.

Wheaton returns to action in New England in two weekends, when the Lyons travel north to Boston University for the East Collegiate Regional Championship on Saturday, March 3 at 1:00 p.m.
