Sarah Swinkin plays hand in trio of victories during Wheaton InvitationalFebruary 10, 2007 NORTON, MA- Senior Sarah Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden) helped a pair of teams win events and took first in a figures competition during the Wheaton College synchronized swimming team's victory at the Wheaton Invitational on Saturday in Balfour Natatorium. During their first home competition in more than two months, the Lyons placed first in the four-team field with 93 points. Boston University had 78, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) finished with 49.5, and Wellesley College notched 23. In the team routine, Swinkin joined senior Elizabeth Corman (Saint Paul, MN/Hill-Murray School), junior Megan Kinney (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough School), sophomores Sharada Strasmore (Weston, CT/Weston) and Sylvia Syracuse (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West), and freshmen Laura Montes (San Juan, PR/Academia San Jose) and Jenna Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden) to record the victory with 79.750 points in the three-team field. Sarah Swinkin also teamed with Syracuse and sister Jenna to capture the trio routine with 78.750 points, bettering Wheaton's second-place threesome of Corman, Montes and Strasmore by just two points. Montes was the solo champion, notching 77.250 points to win by just 1.5. In the duet competition, senior Renata Paglio (Portland, ME/Deering) and sophomore Kelly Maby (Woodhaven, NY/Richmond Hill) finished second, exactly one point behind the winning tandem from Wellesley. During the figures competitions, Sarah Swinkin won the C event with 66.592 points, edging out second-place Jenna, who had 66.101. Strasmore highlighted a dominant Wheaton showing in B figures, during which the Lyons took the top five spots, as she recorded 70.075 points. Paglio had Wheaton's top showing in D figures, as her third-place total was just 0.936 points shy of the top spot. Wheaton hits the road next weekend when it travels to Stanford University, where the Lyons face the Cardinal and the University of Alabama at Birmingham on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
