Synchro takes second to national power Stanford at Wheaton Invitational

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team settled for runner-up honors at its own invitational Saturday afternoon in Balfour Natatorium, as the Lyons took second to national power Stanford University in the five-team field.

Stanford finished three points ahead of the hosts with 89 total points, followed by Boston University with 74 points, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with 58.5 and Smith College with 10.5.

Wheaton landed a trio of second-place finishes and one third-place mark during the routines portion of the meet, including a runner-up standing in the team competition. Juniors Elizabeth Corman (Saint Paul, MN/Hill-Murray School) and Sarah Swinkin (Hamden, CT/Hamden), sophomores Megan Kinney (Los Angeles, CA/Marlborough) and Esther Kovacs (Windham, NH/Notre Dame Academy), and freshman Sylvia Syracuse (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West) combined to total 76.417 points.

Kovacs aided the team performance with strong individual results, taking second in both the solo and duet events. Kovacs joined Syracuse as the duet tandem, while Corman, Kinney and Swinkin sided for a third-place standing during the trio routine. Corman and Kinney also competed in duet, finishing third overall behind the Stanford and Wheaton teams.

The Lyons' B team consisting of junior Renata Paglio (Portland, ME/Deering), sophomores Laura Fleck (Auburn, ME/Hebron Academy), Perri Kapp (Yarmouth Port, ME/Dennis-Yarmouth Regional), Ru-Huey Yen (Des Moines, IA/Abraham Lincoln) and Ru-Shyan Yen (Des Moines, IA/Abraham Lincoln) and freshman Kelly Maby (Woodhaven, NY/Richmond Hill) wrapped up the routines with a fourth-placing showing and 66.5 points.

In figures, Kinney and Swinkin earned the top marks in the B and C categories, respectively, while Paglio had the runner-up placement in D figures. Freshman Sharada Strasmore (Weston, CT/Weston), Kovacs and Corman placed second, fourth and fifth, respectively, during B figures, and Kapp and Fleck notched third- and fifth-place marks, respectively, in the D category.

The Lyons will next compete two weeks from today when they host the East Collegiate Regional Championship in Balfour Natatorium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
