Lyons capture Wheaton College Invitational championship

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College synchronized swimming team captured its own Invitational title Saturday afternoon in Balfour Natatorium, as the Lyons posted top finishes across the board en route to scoring 94 points. Boston University took second with 88 points, while MIT and the University of Rhode Island rounded out the final two spots with 69.5 and 59.0 points, respectively.

Senior captain Beth Percy (St. Louis, MO/Parkway West) handedly won the solo competition with a total of 79.167 points. In the duet portion of the meet, junior Jamie Olken (Brighton, NY/Brighton) and sophomore Jocelyn Phillips (Belmont, MA/Belmont) sided for the top finish with 75.333 points. Senior Liana Cardillo (Bedford, NH/West) and freshman Renata Paglio (Portland, ME/Deering) placed fifth overall with 67.167 points.

Percy again played an integral part in the winning trio routine, joining junior Blair Feldman (Tucson, AZ/Green Fields Country Day School) and freshman Elizabeth Corman (St. Paul, MN/Hill-Murray) for a score of 78.167 points. Wheaton capped its successful meet by defeating the field in the team competition, as Percy, Olken, Feldman, Phillips and senior captain Aimee Sears (Norwell, MA/Thayer Academy) registered a score of 78.833 points.

In the technical elements competition, the Lyons claimed the top finish in three of the four categories, spearheaded by Percy's performance in A figures. Feldman placed second overall in the B category, while Corman and Cardillo had the two top placements in C and D figures, respectively. Phillips finished third in C figures, while Olken and Sears claimed the fifth and sixth-place positions. Paglio placed 11th overall in D figures.

Wheaton will be back in action next weekend, when the Blue and White travel to South Kingstown, Rhode Island for the East Collegiate Regional Championship. Hosted by the University of Rhode Island, the two-day meet is set to begin on Friday, March 5 at 6:00 p.m.
