Roberts shatters two school records at NCAA Division III Championship

March 20, 2004

ST. PETERS, MO- Wheaton College men's swimming standout Barrett Roberts (Portland, ME/Deering) made his first trip to a NCAA Division III Championship a memorable one, as the freshman sprinter not only became the first swimmer in the 13-year history of the program to qualify for a national meet but also shattered two school records in the process.

Roberts qualified for the national championship at the St. Peters Rec-Plex in St. Peters, Missouri by finishing 14th on the entry list in the 50-yard freestyle. Despite placing 44th overall with a time of 21.67, Roberts had an opportunity to compete in two other events, the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races. Posting the school's top times in both events, he finished 21st in the 100 free with a time of 47.06 and 33rd overall in the 200 free in 1:45.69.

Roberts helped lead Wheaton to its highest placement in the six-year history of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), as the Lyons finished the season with a 5-5 dual meet record and fifth-place standing within the conference. In only a year's time, Roberts holds Wheaton's fastest times in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard free events and is also part of the record-holding 200-, 400- and 800-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay teams.
