Kelleher and Moynagh earn weekly softball accolades

April 7, 2008

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College softball standouts Stacey Kelleher (Brockton, MA/Brockton) and Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) earned player-of-the-week and pitcher-of-the-week honors, respectively, from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) for the week ending on Sunday, April 6, while Moynagh was also named New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association (NEISCA) Pitcher of the Week.

Moynagh, a senior tri-captain, received the NEWMAC accolade for the second time in four weeks, and for the third time in her career. Kelleher, a junior first baseman and designated player, drew a weekly award for the first time while helping Wheaton go 7-3.

Moynagh went 4-0 with a 1.02 earned run average and two shutouts last week, completing four of her five starts and reaching the 10-strikeout plateau three times. She fanned 40 and walked only five in 34.1 innings, beginning with a three-hit shutout of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on Tuesday, as Moynagh struck out 10 and walked one during a 4-0 win.

At Bridgewater State College the next day, Moynagh yielded one run on five hits while fanning 10 in a 7-1 win. Moynagh allowed two runs in 6.1 innings at Babson College on Thursday while receiving a no-decision before spinning a three-hit shutout against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) on Saturday, striking out 10 and walking one to help Wheaton to a 2-0 victory. On Sunday against Smith College, she allowed two runs while fanning seven and walking one in a 3-2 triumph.

Kelleher batted .524 with a .952 slugging percentage in eight games last week. She totaled seven runs, eight RBI, six doubles and a home run while walking three times and striking out only once in 24 plate appearances. She hit safely in each of the team's last seven contests.

After missing the MIT doubleheader and going hitless in the first contest at Bridgewater State, Kelleher had a .611 average over the final seven games, beginning with a pinch-hit double during game two against the Bears. During Wheaton's 8-2 game-one win in eight innings against Babson, Kelleher smacked a game-tying home run in the seventh inning while finishing 2-for-3 with two runs. She went 1-for-2 with a run, RBI, double and walk during the second contest.

Against WPI, Kelleher doubled before scoring the eventual winning run in the 2-0 game-two triumph. During Wheaton's sweep of Smith on Sunday, Kelleher doubled in a go-ahead run and walked in the opener before going 4-for-4 with three runs, five RBI and two doubles in the nightcap.

Moynagh has gone 11-1 with a 1.05 ERA and five shutouts. She also has 10 complete games in 14 starts and has struck out 111 and walked only 12 while yielding a .182 opposing batting average.

Kelleher has hit .358 in 23 games this season with 16 runs, 15 RBI and eight doubles, as she is slugging .552. Thanks to five walks and only three strikeouts, Kelleher's on-base percentage is .413, and she has committed only one miscue in 51 chances as a part-time first baseman.

The Lyons are 21-7 overall and 7-3 in the NEWMAC, sitting in third place with six league games remaining. Wheaton is off to its best 28-game start since 2003 and returns to action tomorrow at Eastern Connecticut State University. The non-conference twinbill begins at 5:00 p.m.
