Moynagh notches win, save as Wheaton completes Florida swing at 11-1

March 13, 2008

FORT MYERS, FL- Senior Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) earned the save during the Wheaton College softball team's 5-2 win over the University of Wisconsin at Superior on Thursday before firing a three-hit shutout as the Lyons topped Bowdoin College, 6-0 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Lee County Sports Complex. Wheaton completed a 12-game, six-day stretch at 11-1.

Against Wisconsin-Superior, the Lyons yielded a run in the top of the first inning before countering with two in the second. Freshman Nicole DeRosa (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich Academy) led off by blasting her fifth home run of the spring to left field, and classmate Julie Murray (Canton, MA/Canton) followed with a two-out RBI single.

The Yellowjackets knotted the game in the third and had a runner on second with no one out, but Wheaton sophomore hurler Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) set down the next three hitters to escape the remainder of the inning unscathed, beginning a stretch during which she retired 11 of 14 batters.

Wheaton scored twice in the fifth to pull ahead for good, as senior Erika Marini (Pawtucket, RI/Saint Raphael Academy) doubled home Murray with one down, and classmate Audrey Poulton's (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) two-out double to the left-field gap plated Marini. Freshman Kristen Hunt (Milford, CT/Jonathan Law) scored on an error in the sixth to make it 5-2.

Wisconsin-Superior began the top of the seventh by loading the bases with no one out, but Moynagh came on in relief to fan all three batters she faced without allowing the Yellowjackets to score. With the three-strikeout inning, Moynagh earned a save for the first time since her freshman year. Wheaton tied the 2005 team's program record with its fourth save of the season.

Bagley earned her second win of the spring after going six-plus innings, yielding one earned run on six hits with eight strikeouts and five bases on balls. Hunt and Murray each had two hits. Wisconsin-Superior junior Nichole Tessier (Hermantown, MN) suffered the loss after giving up four earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk during the complete-game effort. The Yellowjackets fell to 2-3.

During Wheaton's second contest, against Bowdoin, Moynagh went the distance in the circle, yielding three singles while striking out nine hitters, walking none and moving to 6-0 this spring. After yielding a one-out single in the bottom of the first inning, Moynagh set down the next 15 Polar Bears before yielding an infield base hit with one down in the sixth. Bowdoin's other hit came with two down in the last of the seventh.

The Lyons got all the offense they would need during the opening frame, as they plated four runs on four hits during a span of six hitters. DeRosa sent an RBI single to center, junior Stacey Kelleher (Brockton, MA/Brockton) followed with a two-run single through the right side, and Hunt came in on a passed ball. In the second inning, Marini's RBI base knock and Poulton's suicide squeeze brought two more runs around.

For Bowdoin, junior Karen Reni (Ashland, MA/Ashland) took the loss after giving up all six runs, just three earned, on seven hits during seven innings. She walked two and fanned three for the 1-1 Polar Bears.

Wheaton begins the northern portion of its schedule on Tuesday, March 25, when the Lyons host Framingham State College for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
