Moynagh, offensive outburst highlight sweep as Lyons move to 9-1March 12, 2008 FORT MYERS, FL- Senior Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) notched her fifth victory during the Wheaton College softball team's 3-1 win over Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday before the Lyons had a near-program-record offensive performance in a 14-4 triumph against Lesley University in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Cape Coral Sports Complex. The Blue and White improved to 9-1. The Battling Bishops scored their lone run during the first inning off Moynagh, as three straight batters at one point reached base, including two on hits, before the senior righty rebounded. During the final 6.1 innings, Moynagh allowed only three of 22 batters to reach, yielding two hits. She fanned at least one hitter in each frame, finishing with eight strikeouts and one walk while allowing four hits. Wheaton turned a one-run deficit into a 2-1 lead on one pitch, as freshman Kristen Hunt (Milford, CT/Jonathan Law) drilled an inside-the-park home run to left field with two down in the top of the fourth and Moynagh running after junior Stacey Kelleher (Brockton, MA/Brockton) had singled with one out. With two down the following inning, senior Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) singled home freshman Julie Murray (Canton, MA/Canton), who had walked leading off. Junior Brady Benton (Concord, NH/Concord) and freshman Nicole DeRosa (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich Academy) each had two hits, with DeRosa tripling. For the 2-3 Battling Bishops, sophomore Catrice Mayweather (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy) took the loss after giving up all three runs, but just one earned, on nine hits during seven innings. She also had three of her team's four hits. Against 1-5 Lesley, Wheaton fell one hit shy of an eight-year-old program record with 22 hits, smacking three more triples after breaking a school standard with four during a contest yesterday. Prior to that game, the Lyons had hit three in a game only three times in program history. Wheaton tallied six runs on seven hits and two errors in the top of the first inning and never looked back. DeRosa smacked a two-run triple during the frame, senior Alix Brozman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) singled home a pair of runs, and Hunt knocked in a run with a base hit. After Lesley plated a run in the first, Benton and Hunt recorded back-to-back RBI singles during the fourth to make it 8-1. The Lynx added single runs in the fourth and fifth before Wheaton upped its advantage to 10-3 in the sixth thanks to a Poulton RBI base knock and junior Lynn Cotto's (Brookfield, CT/Brookfield) suicide squeeze. Brozman ripped an RBI triple in the seventh, Marini followed with an RBI single, and Benton capped a four-run outburst with a long two-run inside-the-park homer to left field. Each of the 10 Lyons who batted recorded at least one hit, led by DeRosa's 4-for-5 showing with two RBI and a triple. Benton had three hits, three runs and three RBI, Marini added three hits and two runs, while Poulton notched a trio of hits and scored twice. Brozman recorded a pair of hits and three RBI, Hunt had two hits and two RBI, while Cotto added two hits. Freshman Rachel Merrick (Methuen, MA/Central Catholic) scored twice, while classmate Marissa Hobocan (Shelton, CT/Saint Joseph) ripped her first collegiate hit. Freshman hurler Courteney Collier (Bolton, MA/Nashoba Regional) went four innings to improve to 3-0, while Poulton entered the circle for the first time this season and earned the save with three innings of work, inheriting a bases-loaded situation before fanning the side to end a fifth-inning threat. For Lesley, senior Christina Anzilotti (Pelham, NY) allowed eight runs on 13 hits in four innings to pick up the loss. The Lyons complete their run of 12 games in six days tomorrow, as Wheaton takes on the University of Wisconsin at Superior at 9:00 a.m. and Bowdoin College at 11:00 a.m. This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
