Pair of shutouts, DeRosa's two home runs push Wheaton to 6-0 in Florida

March 10, 2008

FORT MYERS, FL- Senior Jodi Moynagh (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) and freshman Courteney Collier (Bolton, MA/Nashoba Regional) each tossed shutouts, and freshman Nicole DeRosa (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich Academy) homered in both ends of the Wheaton College softball team's doubleheader on Monday during the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Lee County Sports Complex. The 6-0 Lyons downed Eastern Nazarene College, 12-0 in five innings during the opener before blanking Drew University of New Jersey, 6-0 in the second contest.

Playing the visiting team for the first time this season, Wheaton got out of a first-inning jam against Eastern Nazarene, as senior catcher Alix Brozman (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) played a hand in catching two Crusaders stealing. After going down in order in the opening frame, the Lyons broke out for eight runs on eight hits in the second inning. DeRosa's one-out, two-run blast was the big blow, while junior Brady Benton (Concord, NH/Concord) smacked an RBI double before ripping a two-run single with two down. Senior Erika Marini (Pawtucket, RI/Saint Raphael Academy) added a run-scoring single.

The Lyons tacked on three more runs in fourth, keyed by senior Audrey Poulton's (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) RBI double, before an unearned run came across in the fifth.

Collier faced only one batter over the minimum, yielding one hit to the final 12 hitters. During her first collegiate shutout, Collier allowed three hits and walked one while fanning six. Benton finished 3-for-3 with three RBI, two runs and two doubles, Marini went 2-for-3 with two runs, while freshman Julie Murray (Canton, MA/Canton) was 2-for-2. Freshman Kristen Hunt (Milford, CT/Jonathan Law) scored twice.

For Eastern Nazarene, which was opening its season, junior Rachel Sorensen (Quincy, MA) took the loss after allowing 11 runs, seven earned, on 12 hits in 3.2 innings.

During Wheaton's second contest, Moynagh carried a no-hitter into the fifth, and the Lyons provided early offense. Marini led off the bottom of the first with a double before coming around on Hunt's one-out single, and DeRosa launched her second two-run home run of the day with one out in the second. The Blue and White put the game away with three runs in the fifth, as Marini smacked an RBI double, Hunt singled home another run, and junior Stacey Kelleher (Brockton, MA/Brockton) lofted a sacrifice fly.

Moynagh allowed only one of the first 13 batters to reach base, on a strikeout-wild pitch with two down in the second, before yielding her first hit when freshman Megan Mesaros (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) blooped a single off the left-field chalk leading off the fifth. The next Ranger also singled, but Moynagh worked out of the jam without yielding either runner to reach third. Moynagh retired eight straight after allowing the singles and set down nine of the final 10 Rangers overall.

For the game, Moynagh gave up three singles and fanned six without walking a batter, moving to 3-0 on the season. Hunt had two hits and two RBI, while Marini had two doubles and scored twice.

Junior Lauren Collini (Dallas, PA/Dallas) took the loss for 2-1 Drew, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in five innings.

Now midway through their slate of 12 games in six days, the Lyons play contests tomorrow against fellow Massachusetts institutions Curry College at 9:00 a.m. and Pine Manor College at 11:00 a.m.
