DePolito draws player-of-the-week honors from ECAC and NEWMAC

April 2, 2007

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College softball standout Jessica DePolito (Taunton, MA/Coyle and Cassidy) was named player of the week by both the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) for the week ending on Sunday, April 1. It was DePolito's second career NEWMAC honor, as she also drew the accolade on April 4, 2005, but the first outright award of her career from either organization.

In Wheaton's first week of northern play, the senior first baseman hit .519 by going 14-for-27 at the plate with 10 runs, 10 RBI, four home runs and three doubles. She homered in four straight games and racked up five multiple-hit contests. During a NEWMAC doubleheader sweep of Smith College on Friday, DePolito was 3-for-8 with three RBI and a homer before going 4-for-7 with four RBI and two dingers in a split with Springfield College the next day.

DePolito added a 2-for-3 effort in game one of a twinbill with 24th-ranked Rhode Island College earlier in the week on Tuesday before going 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, a double and a homer in the first game of two against Bridgewater State College on Sunday. She later was 2-for-3 with two runs in the nightcap, while also making three plays in the field during junior teammate Jodi Moynagh's (Worcester, MA/Holy Name Central Catholic) perfect game.

DePolito leads the Lyons with five home runs and a .721 slugging percentage and is tied for the team lead with 24 hits. Her .393 batting average and .422 on-base percentage are both second, and she's tied for second with 14 RBI. Among all NEWMAC players, DePolito is second in home runs, tied for fourth in RBI, ninth in runs (13), tied for ninth in triples (1) and 10th in batting. DePolito began flying up Wheaton's career charts last week, and she stands tied for fifth in home runs (15), 11th in doubles (26) and total bases (220), and 13th in RBI (82).

The Lyons rebounded from a 6-8 start by winning five of six games over the weekend, as Wheaton takes an 11-9 overall record and 3-1 conference mark into tomorrow's home doubleheader with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The first game of the NEWMAC twinbill begins at 3:00 p.m.
