Bagley and Poulton corral ECAC and NEWMAC weekly softball honors

March 19, 2007

NORTON, MA- Wheaton College softball standouts Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) and Audrey Poulton (Charlestown, RI/Chariho Regional) each earned weekly honors from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) for the week ending on Sunday, March 18. Bagley was named pitcher of the week by both organizations, while Poulton drew player-of-the-week accolades from each after earning the NEWMAC pitching nod once last year.

A junior who has seen time on the mound and in the outfield this season, Poulton keyed a 4-2 week for Wheaton by batting .556 (10-18) with team highs of five RBI and a .722 slugging percentage. She also had a .556 on-base percentage and did not strike out in 20 plate appearances. For the season, her .417 average is second on the team and sixth in the NEWMAC, and she has a team-best 3.44 earned run average, which is eighth in the league, in 20.1 innings.

On Wednesday, Poulton launching a game-tying two-run homer in the fifth inning of a 5-2 win over the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey for her first collegiate extra-base hit. Later in the day, Poulton drove in the winning run during a 2-0 victory against the College of Wooster. Her bunt RBI single gave Wheaton the lead for good on Thursday against Transylvania University, and she capped a 3-for-4 performance later in the day with a walk-off single during a five-inning, 9-1 win over North Park University. She also went 3-for-3 against Montclair State University on Tuesday.

Bagley made a pair of stellar starts while going 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA and .095 opponent batting average in three games last week, including two complete games. For the season, the freshman has a 3-1 record, accounting for half of the Lyons' six victories, and has posted a 3.50 ERA in 20 innings while yielding a .205 batting average. Her ERA ranks ninth in the NEWMAC.

Bagley first spun a two-hit shutout against Wooster on Wednesday, fanning three while yielding only singles in each the second and third innings before retiring 12 of the final 13 batters. Against North Park on Thursday, Bagley gave up one run on two hits to the first two batters before setting down 14 of the final 15 batters. She yielded only the two hits while striking out six and not walking a batter in a five-inning victory. Bagley also tossed a perfect seventh inning against Montclair State on Tuesday.

The Lyons are off to a 6-6 start after a 12-game stint in Florida, where Wheaton qualified for the gold bracket at the prestigious National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic and finished eighth among 24 of the best teams from around Division III. The Blue and White is scheduled to continue its season on Sunday by opening NEWMAC play with a doubleheader at Smith College at 12:00 p.m.
