Wheaton suffers first loss of season at MASCAC foe Worcester State, 1-0

September 3, 2008

WORCESTER, MA- The nationally-ranked Wheaton College women's soccer team saw its school-record-tying 36-game regular season unbeaten streak come to an end on Wednesday, as the Lyons dropped a 1-0 decision to Worcester State College on Coughlin Field. The Blue and White fell to 2-1, while the Lancers improved to 1-0-1.

Wheaton, which is ranked 13th nationally and third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), had not lost in regular season play since September 9, 2006, nor had it lost any game on the road since an NCAA Tournament sectional semifinal contest played in Oneonta, New York, on November 19, 2005.

Worcester State, which went to the past four NCAA Tournaments as the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament champion, kept Lyon freshman keeper Kasey Frasier (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) on her toes early, forcing the netminder to make consecutive saves around the 10-minute mark to keep the game scoreless. Senior Tiffany Rotatori (Auburn, MA/Auburn) broke the stalemate at the 22:26 mark off freshman Danielle Clifford's (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) helper before Wheaton fired off three shots, including one that hit the post, during a span of less than a minute later in the half.

In the second stanza, the Lyons attempted seven straight scoreless shots at one point during the first 26 minutes. The Lancers threatened to stretch their lead late, but first-year keeper Lindsay Leddy (Warwick, RI/Wheeler School), who entered the game at halftime, stopped three 88th-minute shots during less than 10 seconds. Wheaton had one last opportunity with under 30 seconds to go, but a Lyon attempt went wide.

Frasier finished with three saves and Leddy five as the visitors held advantages of 21-12 in shots and 6-1 in corner kicks. Sophomore Erin Doherty (Uxbridge, MA/Uxbridge) made six saves for Worcester State.

Wheaton returns home on Saturday to face fourth-ranked Western Connecticut State University at 3:00 p.m. The Colonials advanced to last season's NCAA Tournament Final Four, where it lost to eventual national champion Wheaton College of Illinois.
