Lindsay's pair of late scores steers Wheaton women to 2-1 win at AmherstSeptember 26, 2007 AMHERST, MA- Freshman Barrie Lindsay's (Ipswich, MA/Waring School) two scores in the final seven minutes of regulation Wednesday night helped nationally-ranked Wheaton College post a come-from-behind victory over host Amherst College, 2-1 in non-conference women's soccer action on Gooding Field. Entering tonight's action ranked seventh nationally and first in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), the Lyons improved to 9-0-1. Avenging last year's loss to the Lord Jeffs in the NCAA Tournament, Wheaton extended its regular season unbeaten streak to 25 games while also winning its eighth straight in games decided by one goal. Amherst fell to 1-4-2 in the loss. After giving up just their fourth goal of the season thanks to a host marker in the 80th minute, the Lyons responded less than four minutes later as Lindsay tallied her second collegiate score at 83:11 on assists from senior Katelyn Brack (Lake Oswego, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) and freshman Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Buckingham Browne & Nichols). The trio combined for the game-winning goal with under four minutes to play, as Lindsay collected her first collegiate game-winner. Wheaton senior goalkeepers Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) and Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) each made one save in splitting halves, with Cockburn improving to 4-0 this fall thanks to her performance in the second stanza. Sophomore goalie Lili Ferguson (Winnetka, IL/New Trier) stopped five shots in the loss. Wheaton came away with a 19-14 advantage in shots, while the Jeffs took eight of the game's 12 corner kicks. The Lyons return home Saturday to face New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at Mirrione Stadium at 1:00 p.m. SCORING: 1st 2nd Final 2nd Half: AC- Kyla Woodhouse (Stephanie Yesnik) 79:42; WC- Barrie Lindsay (Katelyn Brack, Melida Alvarez) 83:11, Lindsay (Alvarez, Brack) 86:09 Goalie Saves: WC- Stacey Kronenberg (45:00) 1, Elana Cockburn (45:00) 1; AC- Lili Ferguson 5 Shots: WC- 19; AC- 14 This page is maintained by Scott Dietz.
