Wheaton pushes shutout streak past 500 minutes in 3-0 win over Husson

September 16, 2007

NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College women's soccer team posted its fifth consecutive shutout as the nationally-ranked Lyons downed Husson College, 3-0 on Sunday in Mirrione Stadium. Wheaton, which is ranked 15th nationally and third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), improved to 6-0-1 and extended its shutout streak to 521:35. The Eagles fell to 2-3-1.

In a rematch of a 2006 NCAA Tournament first-round game, the Lyons outshot Husson, 42-0 and held a 15-1 advantage in corner kicks. Despite 21 first-half shots, Wheaton was held off the scoreboard thanks to Husson junior keeper Tatyana Wolterbeek's (Moody, ME/Wells) eight saves and a crucial goal-line stop by a defender. Midway through the stanza, Wheaton freshman Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Loomis Chaffee School) sent a header on net, but Eagle freshman Caitlyn Butterfield (Gorham, ME/Gorham) headed the ball off the line.

Wheaton tallied twice in a 4:15 span early in the second half, with junior Jessica Bramucci (Ludlow, MA/Wilbraham and Monson Academy) playing a hand in each goal. Bramucci scored the winner from the doorstep at 51:17 following crosses by senior Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA/Cathedral) and sophomore Lyndsey McManus (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield). At 55:32, junior Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) blasted a shot into the upper right-hand corner from 10 yards out following touches by Bramucci and sophomore Rosie Levy (Torrance, CA/Chadwick School).

In the 79th minute, Viscomi served the ball from the right flank into the box, where senior Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) received and scored from point-blank range.

Sophomore Abby Isaac (Larchmont, NY/Proctor Academy) went untested in recording her second consecutive shutout, while Wolterbeek made 14 saves.

The Lyons host Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
