Wheaton women give Reis 200th coaching win as Lyons blank Tufts, 2-0September 11, 2007 MEDFORD, MA- The Wheaton College women's soccer team gave 11th-year head coach Luis Reis his 200th coaching victory at the school Tuesday afternoon at Tufts University in a battle of two of the region's top teams, as the Lyons used a pair of second-half scores for its third straight shutout on a rain-soaked Bello Field. Ranked 15th in the country and third in New England by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), Wheaton improved to 4-0-1 while extending its regular season unbeaten streak to 20 games since last season. The Jumbos, who stand fifth in the region, slip to 1-1 on the young season. With the victory, Reis became just the 25th coach in Division III women's soccer history to reach the 200-win plateau. Hitting the milestone in just his 238th game at the school, Reis has compiled a 200-30-8 record, good for an .857 winning percentage. He is one of the fastest coaches to attain the achievement. During today's action, a scoreless first half ensued and over 19 second-half minutes passed without a goal until Wheaton senior Ashley Furr (Chicopee, MA/Cathedral) broke the deadlock with a perfectly-placed shot from the top of the box that snuck underneath the crossbar at 64:15. Senior Lauren Konopka (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) and freshman Amanda Resendes (Swansea, MA/Joseph Case) had the assists on the play. In the 76th minute, senior Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) took a cross from first-year Colleen Liffers (Merrimac, MA/Pentucket Regional) and tapped in her first goal of the season past the Tufts goalkeeper. Wheaton finished with a 15-11 shot advantage and 6-2 edge in corner kicks, as four different goalies played a half apiece. Wheaton senior starter Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) had four saves in the opening half, while classmate Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) earned her third win of the season with three stops in the second frame. For the Jumbos, sophomore Kate Minnehan (Hopkinton, NH) and freshman Hannah Jacobs (Mill Valley, CA) combined for four saves. The Lyons remain on the road Thursday night for a non-conference game against Rhode Island College at 6:00 p.m. The teams will meet for the first time since 1981.
