Alvarez continues scoring burst, tallies both in 2-0 Wheaton winSeptember 5, 2007 NORTON, MA- Freshman Melida Alvarez (Saugus, MA/Loomis Chaffee School) pushed her goal total to five in three games by scoring both of the Wheaton College women's soccer team's tallies during a 2-0 blanking of Endicott College on Wednesday at Mirrione Stadium. The Lyons, who are ranked 21st nationally and fourth regionally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), moved to 3-0 while playing the second of three straight contests against teams that qualified for the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The Gulls, who entered today's action fifth in New England, opened the season by remaining winless in eight all-time meetings against the Blue and White. Wheaton held a 17-1 advantage in shots during the first half but headed to halftime scoreless despite junior Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA/Newton North) nearly giving the hosts the lead on a pair of occasions. In the 39th minute, her hard shot was tipped off the crossbar by junior keeper Amy Meuse (Saugus, MA/Saugus), one of 17 stops the backstop made in the contest. Nearly four minutes later, Viscomi's shot on a breakaway sailed wide. At the 65:31, the Lyons broke on the board. Senior Erin Davis (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) sent a free kick from the right side into the box, where it hit a number of Wheaton players before settling for Alvarez, who sent in her first goal. Nearly five minutes later, senior Jenna Rabesa (Teaticket, MA/Falmouth) dribbled up the left side and sent a pass into the box for Alvarez, whose initial point-blank shot on Meuse was turned away before the ball was knocked back toward the goal by a defender, and Alvarez pounced on the rebound for her second tally. The Lyons outshot the Gulls, 34-3 and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Senior Elana Cockburn (Chestnut Hill, MA/Brookline) made one save during the second half to corral the win after classmate Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, MA/Belchertown) stopped a first-half shot. Wheaton hits the road for the first time this season when the Lyons travel to Western Connecticut State University on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. game.
